Florida has two main examination eligibility routes: complete an approved nurse aide program, or qualify to challenge the exam with a high school diploma or equivalent, or by being at least 18. Every examination applicant also needs a Level II background screening. An approved course can help you prepare, but Florida does not require every applicant to attend one before the first exam attempt. Check the Florida Board of Nursing’s current requirements.
- Choose your route. Compare a state-approved training program, a CNA prep course, or the exam-challenge route. Verify any school on the Florida Board’s CNA program list; a directory listing alone does not establish approval or accreditation.
- Plan the full cost and timetable. Ask the campus about classroom and hands-on work, admission requirements, uniforms, test fees, and the next available start date before paying.
- Apply and complete screening. Follow the Board’s Prometric application and electronic fingerprint instructions.
- Take the required test and verify certification. The Florida CNA exam includes knowledge and manual-skills components; the Board describes a special written-test rule for recent approved-program graduates, so check which components apply to you.
How long does Florida CNA training take?
An approved Florida CNA program is a 120-hour course. At 20–40 scheduled hours per week, that is roughly 3–6 weeks of instruction; evening or part-time classes take longer, and exam scheduling, screening and certification add time. A four-week or fast-track class can be possible, but it cannot skip required course hours or the state’s certification steps. Free training, payment plans and aid
Ask local nursing homes about employer-paid training or reimbursement after hire; CMS explains the nursing-home route. Funding is not automatic. Some listed schools report payment plans or aid, but terms must be confirmed directly and are not offers from this directory.

Florida CNA test, testing centers and online study
Florida’s Prometric exam normally tests both knowledge and hands-on nurse aide skills. The Board describes a 60-question, 90-minute written test and a five-skill manual evaluation; eligible recent graduates of an approved program may have a different testing requirement. Review the current Board instructions and Prometric’s Florida candidate information before scheduling a test center.
Online CNA prep can help with theory, but it does not complete Florida’s manual-skills exam or background screening. If a provider advertises a fully online “CNA license,” ask exactly how it meets Florida’s testing and practical requirements. Can I take the Florida CNA exam without going to school?
Yes, Florida allows eligible applicants to challenge the exam with a high school diploma or equivalent, or if they are at least 18. You still need the required background screening and test components. After three failed attempts, the Board requires an approved 120-hour training program before another attempt. Check the Board’s eligibility rules.
How do I know whether a Florida CNA school is approved?
Check the exact program on the Florida Board of Nursing’s current CNA program list, then ask the school to confirm its campus, course, next class and recent exam-pass results. “Accredited” in an advertisement is not a substitute for checking Florida approval.
What if I fail the Florida CNA exam?
Ask Prometric which part you failed, how to retest and what fee applies. Florida says a candidate who fails part of the exam three times must complete an approved 120-hour CNA program before trying again. Both required parts must be passed within the state’s score-validity period. See the Board’s exam FAQ.
What can disqualify me from becoming a CNA in Florida?
Florida requires Level II screening and reviews relevant criminal or disciplinary history. A record does not mean every applicant has the same outcome; the offense, timing and any available exemption matter. Check the Board’s screening and eligibility guidance before paying for training if this may affect you.
Can I transfer an out-of-state CNA certificate to Florida?
Florida has an endorsement route for applicants with active, clear out-of-state CNA certification, subject to verification and background screening. It is an application, not an automatic transfer. Check the Board’s endorsement requirements before relying on your prior certificate for work in Florida.
How much are CNAs paid in Florida?
For nursing assistants, the May 2025 Florida median was $18.03 per hour; the lower and upper wage points shown were $16.52 and $22.50. Where in Florida can CNAs earn more?
Compare local offers rather than assuming one city is always best. The May 2025 wage data show a $19.36 hourly median in Naples–Marco Island, above Florida’s $18.03 median, but a higher local median does not guarantee a higher entry-level offer. Check metro-by-metro wage estimates and living costs.
Are nursing assistants in demand in Florida?
Florida projections estimate nursing-assistant employment rising from about 93,860 in 2024 to 104,140 in 2034, with roughly 14,660 openings a year including replacement openings.
